Accreditation

Accreditation is the process by which an Accreditation Body (AB) grants formal recognition to an organisation or person (Facility) as technically competent to carry out specific tasks as described in a published scope of accreditation. Technical competence is established and maintained through a series of routine conformity assessments conducted by the Accreditation Body using a peer review process.

Metrology

Metrology is the science of measurement, embracing both experimental and theoretical determinations at any level of uncertainty in any field of science and technology. Metrology can be divided into three categories:

  • Scientific Metrology: Scientific metrology is at the top of the pyramid and covers the development of new measurement methods, the realization of measurement standards, and the transfer of traceability through these standards to the users.

  • Applied Metrology: Applied metrology covers the measurement science developed toward manufacturing and end-user processes, ensuring the suitability of the measurement instruments, their calibration, and traceability.

  • Legal Metrology: Legal metrology is at the end of the line, covering regulatory requirements of well established measurements and measuring instruments for the protection of consumers and fair trade.
